Press Trust of India Chennai
Arch rivals DMK and AIADMK members today sparred in the Tamil Nadu Assembly over a DMK MLA's remarks on temple visits by the people.

It started when Cooperation Minister Sellur K Raju objected to certain remarks of DMK member K Radhamani who drew a parallel between devotion to god or visiting temples and stock market fluctuations.

He said the "situation" of the people determined the frequency of their temple visits, claiming that they were more during "challenging times".

Raju objected to this and made some remarks against the DMK which infuriated its members.

A heated debate ensued between the Opposition and Treasury benches even as Raju explained that he had not "targeted anybody".

Revenue Minister RB Uthayakumar also insisted that the remark was not aimed at anyone but the agitating DMK members did not relent.

He too chided Radhamani for comparing devotion with the stock market and said the member should be "responsible" while talking about such matters.

Later, Speaker P Dhanapal pacified the opposition members, referring to the ministers' contention that the remarks were not aimed at any particular individual.

The incident took place during a debate on grants for the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment department.
