: A day after Tamil Nadu government enhanced the MSP for paddy, DMK chief Karunanidhi today said it was not reasonable and urged the state to fix Rs 2000 per quintal as the Minimmum Support Price, considering the 'pathetic situation' of the farmers.

"Considering the pathetic situation of farmers, I urge the government to immediately announce Rs.2000 per quintal as Minimum Support Price for paddy at least this year," he said.

"If that is not done, farmers will give the price for it (for not hiking MSP) to the AIADMK in next year's Assembly elections," he said in a statement.

The Centre had announced the MSP for fine quality paddy and the common variety at Rs 1,450 and Rs 1,410 per quintal, respectively.

Jayalalithaa had announced yesterday that the state government would provide an additional Rs 70 for fine quality paddy and Rs 50 for common variety per quintal, effective today.

Karunandihi termed the increase "as very very less, not reasonable in the present situation and it would not give even a small amount of satisfaction to farmers.
