Opposition DMK today expressed concern over equipment used by differently abled persons coming under the GST.

During a debate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Opposition Leader M K Stalin said many equipment and accessories used by such persons were exempted from taxes but now Goods and Services rates between 5-12 per cent applied on them.

Among others, watches and papers used by visually challenged, wheelchairs and certain hearing aid now attracted GST rates ranging between 5-12 per cent, he said.

"The differently abled persons are affected due to this. Has the government taken up the matter with the Centre," he asked.

Commercial Taxes Minister K C Veeramani said already many changes have been factored-in in the GST following Tamil Nadu taking them up at the GST Council meetings.

"Even after implementation of the GST (from July 1), we can still insist for exemption. The government will take due action," he said.
