"It goes without saying that the concerned respondents shall strictly follow the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in case of destruction of public and private properties," a bench comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam said and disposed of a petition filed by city advocate R Balasubramanian.
The petitioner had sought a direction to the state government and police for taking preventive measures to curb "barbarian" activity of the DMK and "avoid sufferings to the public" due to the protest.
Advocate General A Navaneethakrishnan submitted the government would look into the matter and ensure that law and order was maintained.
The guidelines laid down by the apex court on the basis of reports submitted by the Justice K T Thomas Committee and F S Nariman Committee include a meeting between the organiser of the protest and police to lay down conditions for a peaceful march or protest, prohibiting carrying of weapons like knives and lathis and videographing of such protests to the maximum possible extent.
