After having announced its decision to contest the December 4 bypoll for Yercaud (Reserved) Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu, DMK today sought the support of all opposition parties for its nominee to put up a united fight against ruling AIADMK.

DMK president M Karunanidhi wrote to various parties, including main opposition DMDK, CPI-M and CPI, Congress, BJP and even PMK, which had walked out of his party-led alliance after the 2011 elections, seeking support.

In identical letters to Vijayakant (DMDK), G Ramakrishnan and D Pandian (secretaries of CPI-M and CPI) and TNCC president B S Gnanadesikan among others, Karunanidhi sought their support to oppose "AIADMK's anti-democratic activities."

"To help DMK's cause of protecting democracy and defeat the autocratic attitude, I kindly request you to extend your party's support to DMK's candidate in the bypolls," he said.

The bypoll is necessitated following the death of AIADMK MLA C Perumal.
