Scores of workers belonging to the DMK and other political parties were arrested today for trying to stage a picket in various places in the district to protest against Tuticorin 'police firings' and the detention of DMK Working President M K Stalin in Chennai.

Security was beefed up here apprehending protests by political parties against the killing of 11 people during anti-sterlite protests in Tuticorin.

Nearly 500 DMK workers were held in several places.

While 200 DMK workers were arrested in Pollachi, 100 were held in Mettupalayam, police said.

In nearby Tirupur, about 40 CPI-M and AIYF workers were held in two different areas, they said.

The VOC Park Grounds, where an agitation was organised in January last year over jallikkattu (bull fight), was brought under tight security blanket since last night.
