'Do not keep untreated bio-medical wastes beyond 48 hr'

Punjab Government has asked all institutions, which deals with medical wastes, not to keep untreated bio-medical wastes beyond a period of 48 hours.

In guidelines issued to hospitals, laboratories and blood banks, the government has made it mandatory to dispose off untreated bio-medical wastes after 48 hours, an official spokesman said here today.

If for any reason, it becomes necessary to store the waste beyond a period of 48 hours, the agency must take permission of the authority and take measures to ensure that the waste does not affect human health and environment, he said.

The instructions also made it mandatory to segregate bio medical waste into containers or bags at the point of generation prior to its storage, transportation, treatment and disposal.
