A doctor working at Sahapur Rural Hospital in the district was allegedly beaten up by a couple following an altercation over a petty issue, police said today.

Dr Prakash Jagre was trying to shift a cancer patient in an ambulance to another hospital yesterday, but the couple's car parked near the Sahapur hospital blocked the exit, police inspector M D Sakde said.

The doctor then went up to the couple - Bhagwan Gaikwad and Jyoti Gaikwad - and asked them to shift the car as the ambulance with a serious patient was on its was to another hospital.

The couple got annoyed and refused to oblige and allegedly beat up the doctor, he said.

Later, based on a complaint, police registered an offence against the couple under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504, 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and also sections 122 and 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act, police said adding that no arrest has been made so far in this connection.
