Following the incident, medicos today are observing a 24-hour cease-work in the region to protest the incident even as the Meghalaya government has ordered an inquiry into the alleged handcuffing of the doctor by the police.
The South Garo Hills district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry, headed by Additional District Magistrate A M Sangma, into the police action and the report is expected to be filed within two weeks, officials said.
The government doctors association, the Meghalaya Medical Service Association (MMSA), has demanded stringent action against the erring police personnel, and said that if it was nothing they would resort to a state-wide strike from next week.
