An eight-feet long dolphin was found dead on the banks of Dhadhar river at a village near here, a forest official said today.

For the first time, a dead dolphin was found yesterday in Dhadhar river at Magnad village of Jambusar taluka, about 60 kms from here, district forest officer Ranjan L Patel told PTI.

"The eight-feet long dolphin came along with the high tide in the Khambhat Akhat (Cambay sea) about three days back but could not swim back due to lack of depth in water in Dhadhar river and died there," he said.

Villagers gathered in large number to witness the unusual sighting of the mammal in river water.

Such incidents have been earlier reported from south Gujarat coast near Tapti river.

Darshan Desai, of 'Prayas' NGO, feels polluted water is becoming a major cause of death of dolphins in the coastal areas of south Gujarat as the rivers and rivulets flowing there carry industrial effluents to the sea.
