DMDK today urged the Centre not to give its consent for conducting Environmental Impact Assessment study by Kerala for the proposed dam on Siruvani river.

Party chief Vijayakanth said the central government which has put the EIA in abeyance should not give consent for it "permanently," adding such a move would be beneficial to farmers and public in Tamil Nadu.

Hailing the Centre for its decision to put on hold the recommendation to carry out an EIA study for the project, he said it was a victory for the Tamil Nadu people.

"This is a victory for the Tamil Nadu people and agitations held by our party," he said in a statement.

He urged the Centre to set up the Cauvery Management Board and take steps to allow the traditional bull taming sport "Jallikattu."

Vijayakanth has written a letter to the Centre thanking it for its move on Siruvani, the statement said.

The Centre had informed Tamil Nadu yesterday about its decision to keep in abeyance its nod for an EIA by Kerala on Siruvani river.
