An organisation claiming to represent Gujjars in Jammu and Kashmir today supported legal action against land grabbers but expressed concern over what it called attempts to mix tribal issues with the problem of land grabbing or demography.
If somebody is a land grabber, they should be taken to task but poor tribals should not be targeted. We, Gujjars, being resident of state owe all right to move in and settle in any part of the state lawfully, Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation (TRCF) said in a statement here.
Reacting to the statement of various Jammu-based organizations over the reported remarks of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti that the tribal population should not be disturbed or dislocated till a tribal policy is adopted regarding their settlements, TRCF said some groups are trying to mix tribal issues with the problem of land grabbing or of demography.
It is unfortunate and ill-timed, it said. The TRCF, founded by noted researcher Javaid Rahi, said the community was looking for help from all quarters on humanitarian grounds.
