Actor Mark Hamill has said that his character of Luke Skywalker in the upcoming film "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" has not switched over to the dark side.

The 66-year-old actor, who reprises the iconic role in the latest installment of the popular sci-fi franchise, believes that the fundamental personality of Skywalker remains the same.

Talking to Disney Insider, the actor said, "Luke has lost confidence in his ability to make good choices. It haunts him to the core. But he hasn't gone to the dark side. This isn't an evil version of him. But it's still an incarnation of the character I never expected. It has pulled me out of my comfort zone. It's a real challenge."

"Actually, I don't think Luke's fundamental personality has changed, except that he is older and his life experiences have shaped his outlook the same way they do for all of us," Hamill added.

The film also features John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis and marks Carrie Fisher's last performance.

"The Last Jedi" opens in the theatres on December 15.
