A woman in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat today filed a complaint against her husband and father-in-law, both policemen, for allegedly demanding dowry and throwing her out of the house for giving birth to a girl, following which an FIR was registered against them.

Nilaben Anand, the complainant, is a resident of Himmatnagar in Sabarkantha district. Her husband Ashok Makwana is a Sub-Inspector at Kutch police station, while the father-in-law Mahendra Makwana is an Inspector attached to the Junagadh police.

The FIR registered with Himmatnagar police says that after the woman got married to Ashok in 2012, she constantly faced mental torture, with her father-in-law demanding a dowry of Rs 1 crore to buy a bungalow in Ahmedabad.

The woman also alleged that after she gave birth to a girl, the husband's family severed all ties with her, and she was forced to return to her parents' house.

"We have lodged an FIR against both the persons under relevant sections for dowry demand and inflicting mental torture. We are investigating the matter," said Sub-Inspector D D Parmar of Himmatnagar B Division police station.
