Parminder Kaur has alleged that her in-laws started torturing her and demanded dowry from her parents after she got married to their son Alamjeet Singh on October 9 last year, a spokesperson of the Commission said today.
The woman said in her complaint that her husband assured that he would apply for spouse visa, but he did not send it and is now seeking divorce.
She said that a case has also been registered against her husband at Amritsar. She alleged that police has not taken any action at the behest of her in-laws.
The spokesperson said that the Commission ordered the Commissioner of Police, Amritsar, to look into the allegations and to see that a fair probe is conducted in this case.
The IG, NRI Affairs, has been appointed to supervise the progress of the investigation, the spokesperson said.
The NRI Commission is a four-member State Commission with the powers of a civil court, formed with the objective to safeguard the interest of the NRI community in the state.
