DRI officials seize Rs 3 cr worth narcotic substances; 4 held

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials unearthed a drug smuggling racket with the arrest of four persons and seizure of narcotic substances valued at Rs three crore.

Acting on a tip off that some narcotic substances were smuggled from New Delhi to Chennai by a gang in train, the officials intercepted two passengers at the Chennai Central Railway Station last night, a release from DRI said.

"The passengers confessed that the narcotics were procured from New Delhi and were carried in their respective suitcases for exports. The drug was found to be Amphetamine and was valued at Rs 2.51 crore," it said.
 

On information from the passengers that the goods were to be taken to a godown in Chennai, DRI officials conducted a search and two persons were arrested along with the narcotic substances including 32.8 lakh zolphidem tablets.

"With the total seizure of 25.16 kgs of Amphetamine, 32.85 lakh tablets of Zolpidem, the goods valued at Rs three crore in international market."

The four persons -- Kader Mohideen Mohammed Ali Jinna, Jahir Hussain, Syed Ibrahim and Shahul Hameed were arrested yesterday and were remanded to judicial custody under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
