Six kg of gold, concealed in detergent powders and valued at Rs 1.75 cr, were seized along with 150 cartons of cigarettes today from a container at Tuticorin Port here.
According to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials involved in the seizure, value of the cigarettes was estimated to be about Rs 10 lakh and five persons have been arrested.
The seizure happened after interrogation of one Jayaroy and four others, in connection with another seizure on February 11 of 12 kg of gold that had arrived from Malaysia.

Jayaroy, from Tuticorin, is said to be the kingpin of the gold smuggling network.
According to DRI, since 2013, 596 kg of gold worth Rs 168 crore had been seized and more than 100 persons have been arrested.
