Foreign brand cigarettes worth Rs seven crore, which were allegedly smuggled into the country, have been seized by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), an official said today.

Acting on intelligence, the DRI officials seized two containers, declared to be having insulating rubber tubes in them, at Inland Container Depot (ICD) Dadri, Noida on Saturday.

On examination of the containers it was found that about 50 per cent of the cartons labelled as insulating rubber tubes contained cigarettes of 'Gudang Garam' brand, a senior DRI official said.

The smuggled cigarettes do not conform to the statutory health warning prescribed for the sale of tobacco products in the domestic market, he said.

This is the second instance of seizure in recent months. in July, cigarettes worth Rs 6.5 crore were siezed from ICD, Tughlakabad.

The DRI seized foreign brand cigarettes of Djarum Black, ESSE Lights and Dunhill worth Rs 108 crore during the last fiscal.
