DRI seizes over 10 tonnes of redsanders from China bound

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has foiled an attempt to smuggle over ten tonnes of redsanders by seizing two containers from a vessel bound for China at the container terminal of the Visakhapatnam port here.

In a release, Additional Director General, Hyderabad zonal unit, M.K.Singh, said based on specific information that redsanders, prohibited for export, were being smuggled, officers of DRI, Visakhapatnam, offloaded the containers on March 14.

The officials found 10.1 tonnes of redsanders along with bentonite powder in the containers which were seized.

Bentonite, a type of absorbent clay, is a useful substance in industrial applications.

The contraband, shipped from Chennai, was estimated to fetch a price of Rs four crore in China.
