Press Trust of India Mangalore
The Mangalore city authorities have directed the police, social welfare and women and child welfare departments to carry out a continuous anti begging drive to make the city beggar free.

Addressing a meeting at his office to discuss the eradication of begging as per the Anti-begging Act, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said the drive would be taken up with the help of NGOs.

A solution had to be found for the problem of begging in the city as the people had complained about this. Many NGOs had suggested that more rehabilitation centres be opened and the procedure for admitting such persons to these centres should be simplified.

Ibrahim assured that he would give notice to register all the NGO's with the District Social Welfare Department (DSWD) to carry out the programme. All such persons brought to the centres should be admitted, he said.
