A traffic constable was severely injured when the driver of a mini truck, which he had flagged down, allegedly tried to crush him at west Delhi's Janakpuri area today.

The traffic constable, identified as Dinesh, was rushed to a hospital, where he is reported to be in critical condition. However, the errant truck driver is still at large, DCP (West) Pushpendra Kumar said.

According to police, the incident was reported around 1 PM when constable Dinesh flagged down the mini truck on Pankha Road.

The driver stopped at once but when the constable started checking his papers, the driver allegedly pressed the accelerator of the vehicle and tried to run over the policeman.

"When he failed to escape with the vehicle, the driver abandoned the truck and fled," police said.

Locals helped the constable and also called up the police control room to report the matter, they said.

"The truck has been impounded and its owner is being questioned. A police team is searching for the driver," said Kumar.
