In a first, the city police deployed drones to keep a check on hooligans during the Holi festival, even as 146 people were challaned for drunk driving on the occasion.

"We used drones to keep a tab on violators and those who indulged in hooliganism on Holi," Chandigarh DSP Kewal Krishan said today.

The drones were deployed at several points in the Union Territory, including Matka Chowk and Sector 10, which is known as the 'Geri route', he said.

Chandigarh (Traffic) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shashank Anand said drones were also used as an experiment to check traffic violations.

"We will be using drones more often now, not only for checking traffic violations, but also for monitoring traffic congestions. Many a times, the traffic officials standing at the intersection are not aware of the extent of the congestion. We will be using this technology at very busy locations like Tribune Chowk to ease congestion," he said.

Meanwhile, the city police issued 146 challans for drunk driving, 46 for using modified silencer in bikes and 24 for over-speeding.

"During the special drive on the eve of #HoliHai @trafficchd caught 146 drunk drivers, 46 with modified silencer in bullet bikes & 24 overspeeding vehicles in #chandigarh Many will lose their DL for months," the Chandigarh SSP (Traffic) tweeted.
