CPI(M) veteran and Chairman of State Administrative Reforms Committee V S Achuthanandan today asked his party led LDF government in Kerala to drop its move to regularise illegal construction.

"The government should give up its plan to accord sanction to high-rise buildings and resorts under the cover of regularising illegal construction of buildings below 1,500 square feet by levying penalty," the former Kerala chief minister said in a statement.

"If media reports in this regard are correct, illegal construction will be encouraged with this move," he said.

The Left leader alleged that "resort mafia and corrupt officials" were trying to get sanction for high-rise buildings and resorts built by violating Coastal Regulation Zone Act and the Wetland Conservation Act.

He recalled that he had strongly opposed the plan of the previous Congress-led UDF government to regularise illegal construction.
