If one goes by the words of a Tamil Nadu minister, the widespread rains in the state in the past two months are a result of special prayers to propitiate the rain god.

Agriculture Minister R Doraikkannu today said 'varuna yagams' or havans had been conducted in several Lord Shiva temples in the state following water shortage.

"Therefore, it has been raining (in Tamil Nadu) for the past two months," he said in a brief mention in the assembly.

Tamil Nadu faced unprecedented drought following the failure of monsoon last year.

The government has already come out with a series of programmes aimed at mitigating farmers' woes, besides ensuring drinking water supply.
