Drunk cop frightens tourists at Lataguri resort, suspended

A group of tourists were harassed by a police officer and two civic volunteers, all of them in inebriated condition, at a resort in Jalpaiguri district, police said today.

The police officer, who is an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), was suspended.

The incident took place at Lataguri yesterday night when the police officer and two civic volunteers entered the premises of the resort and started disturbing tourists in the middle of the night, police said.

They went around seven rooms, kept banging the doors and frightened the tourists, a police official said.

Around 40 tourists who were in the resort gheraoed the policeman and his associates, he said.
 

The gherao continued till an FIR was lodged against the police officer and his associates at Kranti police outpost in Lataguri today morning, the officer said.

"The ASI has been suspended," Superintendent of police of Jalpaiguri district Amitabha Maiti said.

The SP also said that action will be taken against the civic volunteers too.

The ASI was also posted at Kranti police outpost, a police officer said.

All the tourists who were staying at the resort, including a few from Kolkata, left the resort today, Lataguri Resorts Owners' Association secretary, Dibyendu Deb said.
