A police force later resorted to baton charge to quell a stone-throwing mob but the situation was stated to be normal now.

The ASI Ram Lagan Singh had gone to Paswantola with a police team to broker peace between two parties, locked in dispute over a piece of land.

The personnel later beat up a couple Ramvilas Paswan and his wife Usha Devi as reported by villagers, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Law and Order, Neeraj Kumar Singh said.

After seeing the woman having fainted and lying on the ground, angry villagers turned on the cops and took the ASI hostage for over four hours, he said.

Police reinforcements, led by the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Pradeep Kumar Gupta, later rescued the ASI, Kumar said.

The police also baton charged the villagers after they hurled stones, the DSP said adding seven persons have been arrested in this connection.

The ASI has been sent on line duty and a probe ordered against other cops on the issue of assault.
