DSP, 2 others injured in mob attack; police open fire

Three persons including a senior police official were injured when a group of people protesting against a village defence party pelted stones at police which opened fire to quell the mob in Assam's Darrang district.

The mob, angered by the beating up of four persons by a village defence party suspecting them to be cattle thieves last night, pelted stones today injuring Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border) Deba Ranjan Sarma at Rajghat yown in the district, police said.

The mob damaged cars and burnt tyres on the roads, they said.

After a lathicharge failed to control the situation, the police fired, injuring two persons. The police claimed that rubber bullets were fired.
 

The two injured Moinur Ali and Nizamur Ali were referred to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital, they added.
