Facing stinging criticism over the murder of a DSP, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today assured the wife of the slain officer that his government would reccomend a CBI probe into the killing.

Akhilesh, who arrived at the native village of DSP Zia-ul-Haq amid anti-government slogans, assured his wife Praveen Azad that stern action would be taken against those found involved in the murder.

Praveen has alleged hand of controversial Independent MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh 'Raja Bhaiya' in the murder of her husband.

Rajya Bhaiya quit as Cabinet minister today after his name cropped up in the police officer's murder.

Praveen told Akhilesh that Haq was facing pressure as he was inquiring into a case of arson in which Raja Bhaiya's men were involved.

She said Haq was to submit his report into the case before a court on March 12 and there was pressure on him to change it.

The Chief Minister handed over two cheques of Rs 25 lakh each to the widow and the father of Haq and promised proper security to the family besides appointment of two family members on gazetted posts.

Parveen refused the job offer as she was pursuing a medical course in Lucknow.

Earlier in the day, state police chief A K Sharma, who visited Haq's village, had to face anger of locals who staged a protest and shouted slogans against the killing.
