Hailing India's pact with Singapore to amend the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), BJP President Amit Shah tonight said it marks the Modi government's effort to curb black money abroad after it took measures like demonetisation to check it within the country.
With 2016 drawing to a close, Shah said the year has been "historic" in several ways in fight against black money and corruption, citing similar pacts with Mauritius and Cyprus to amend the DTAA.
"With an aim to share information about the black money kept in Swiss banks, the Modi government has tried to implement the amended DTAA with Switzerland and did similar agreements with several countries...
"This is due to tireless efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley that India will begin receiving real time information about investment of Indians and Indian institutions from 2019 Shah said in a statement.
The Indian government has been trying to end the black money menace from the day one and these pacts to amend DTAA are a step in this direction, he said.
Shah cited measures like opening of Jan Dhan accounts, Income Declaration Scheme and Benami law brought by the government to buttress his point.
