The University of Delhi has joined hands with the city's Municipal Corporation (MCD) for its cleanliness drive as a part of the Narendra Modi Government's ambitious 'Clean India' campaign.

"The 'DU Swachhta Abhiyan' which will be started on October 2 from the varsity's Gandhi Bhavan, will be joined by around 100 MCD workers, who will go across colleges and begin the cleaning work wherever required," Bipin Tiwari, Deputy Dean of DU's Equal Opportunity cell.

However, the varsity officials say that the campaign has been initiated to spread a message that the responsibility of cleanliness of the campus is not only of the civic workers but of each DU member.

"The drive will be joined by all the HODs, Principals across the South and North campuses and the Vice Chancellor to inspire the students to take up the responsibility of keeping the campus clean themselves," said Tiwari.

In line with the nation-wide call by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "Swachh Bharat," the Delhi University constituted a 20-member committee which will be responsible for spreading awareness among the students about cleanliness, hygiene and safety.

The Committee will also be monitoring the work done in this respect across the campuses.

"DU Swachhta Abhiyan will not be a one-day ceremonial drive but will run through the year till 2019 and will culminate on 150the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. We hope to achieve perfect standards of cleanliness on campus by then," said DU's Media Coordinator and Joint Dean of Welfare, Malay Neerav.

While the students, teaching and non-teaching staff of DU will take up the responsibility of cleanliness of the campus, they will be assisted by the MCD workers posted in the area.

"All the principals have been instructed to initiate the campaign in their respective colleges and the programme will be monitored by the university authorities in three phases including that in 2015,2017 and 2019," he added.
