The Mamata Banerjee government today decided to merge the ailing Durgapur Projects Ltd (DPL) with the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited as its subsidiary unit.
Existing employees, both permanent and contractual of DPL, will not be affected in any way, Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said after a Cabinet meeting at the state Assembly here.
DPL currently has around 3,000 employees on its rolls.

According to official sources, DPL's distribution and transmission departments would be transferred to the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd and the West Bengal Electricity Transmission Company Ltd.
With a total capacity of 660 MW, the state-owned DPL is one of the most important industrial units in the Durgapur-Asansol belt.
The company has been dependent on power generation for revenue after its coke-oven unit stopped operations last year.
