The station master of Mahalimarup, near Jhargram, noticed some problems with the axle and brake in the third rear coach of the train and promptly alerted the station master of Sini, the next station, where the train was stopped for immediate check at 3.30 PM.

The spokesman said that had the problems not been rectified, the train could have derailed.

''After a full check of the axle problems which caused brake-binding, the coach (B-3) was detached from the train which was taken to another track,'' he said.

Most of the passengers were transferred to other coaches, while others were accommodated in the Barbil-Howrah Janshtabdi express.

The train was allowed to resume journey at 5.55 PM.
