The Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) today protested outside the office of the University Grants Commission (UGC) here over reports of forced autonomy to DU colleges.
DUTA president Rajib Ray said the Delhi University (DU)has its own statutory autonomy inscribed in its founding Delhi University Act, and any move that "violates its founding act, statutes and ordinances is legally tenable".
"We held a demonstration outside the UGC office while its Full Commission Meeting was on. Senior UGC officials informed us this morning that the item on granting autonomy to
St Stephen's and Hindu College has been dropped from the agenda of the meeting.
"This deferral is, however, no guarantee against the Centre's plan to privatise the premier public-funded higher educational institutions," he said.
Ray said the protest would continue, including boycott of evaluation, until the UGC assures that autonomy will not be forced on colleges.
He also asked the Commission to withdraw its March 5 notification on roster, and restore the status quo on reservation in appointments.
The DUTA chief added that the advertised posts in the Delhi University should also be filled immediately.
