The youth and students wings of Left parties today took out a rally here demanding resignation of West Bengal Education minister for the government's failure to conduct the Primary Teachers Eligibility Test tomorrow for which a record 23 lakh candidates had applied.
Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Students Federation of India (SFI) activists took out a procession from College Street to Moulali crossing in Central Kolkata, waving placards, flags and shouting slogans against 'incompetent' Mamata Banerjee government. They also burnt the effigy of Education minister Partha Chatterjee.
The police said the procession led to a huge traffic snarl for over three hours in central Kolkata.
Chatterjee had yesterday announced that the primary TET examination for recruitment of teachers which was scheduled to be held on Sunday (September 30) would be held on October 4 after some question papers went missing.
The decision to defer the exam was taken after two bags of question papers went missing from a Hooghly-bound bus.
The minister asked his officials to take steps against alleged lapses by the postal department.
More than 23 lakh candidates had applied for the Primary TET examination.
