Following the request of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Gauhati High Court will set up Fast Track Courts in each district of the state for day to day trial of cases of rape and murder of children and women, a high court statement said here.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, in a letter on March 26, had urged the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court to consider setting up of fast track courts in the wake of the rape and murder of a minor girl in Nagaon district, and similar cases in the state.

An Administrative Committee comprising the chief justice and three senior-most judges today held a meeting and resolved to establish one exclusive Fast Track Court to try cases of rape and murder of women and children in each district of Assam, the statement said.

The committee asked the state government to create the required infrastructure, posts of judges and supporting staff for the courts.

As an interim measure, the committee also resolved to designate one court of additional sessions judge in each district as Fast Track Court to try these cases on day to day basis, the statement said.

In case of absence of additional sessions judge's court in a district, the court of the sessions judge will be the Fast Track Court there.
