H S Brahma also said he could not understand how so many names could go missing in such a compact area.

Press Trust of India New Delhi
Terming as "massive operational mistake" the absence of a large number of names from the voters' list in Mumbai, Election Commissioner H S Brahma today apologised to them and said the mistake would be rectified.

"I must apologise and regret that the names of such a large number of our voters has not been found in the list. It's a very, very massive operational mistake which should not have happened," he told reporters.

He also said he could not understand how so many names could go missing in such a compact area.

A large number of voters, including noted personalities, had to return disappointed from polling booths as poll officials told them that their names were listed in the voters' roll.

"This is some lapse on our part. We should acknowledge it and try to rectify the defect," he said.
