The Election Commission today asked political parties not to involve children in any work connected with the election process to the Haryana Assembly polls.

Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Shrikant Walgad said that the leaders of political parties have been asked to ensure that children are not involved in election work like campaigning and carrying of electioneering material.

He said the District Election Officer or Returning Officer would be held responsible for violation of child rights and would face severe disciplinary and legal action.

Walgad said that Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986 bans the employment of children below 14 years of age in specified occupations such as transport of goods.

"It is the responsibility of the leaders of the political parties to ensure that there is no violation of these instructions," he added.
