After complaints from Opposition parties, the Election Commission today instructed police to keep a close eye on Trinamool Congress leader and jailed ex-minister Madan Mitra who was hospitalised three days ago.

Upon EC's instruction, the state Home department issued an order to jail authorities and Kolkata Police Commissioner saying that no person other than Mitra's family members should get access to him.

The order also said that Mitra should in no way be able to use mobile.

The Congress and CPI-M had yesterday urged the Election Commission that the activities of the Trinamool leader should be monitored inside the state-run SSKM hospital.

Mitra was hospitalised following complaints of chest pain and breathlessness on April 26.

The commission has yesterday issued instructions that activities of anti-social elements who are in jail either undertrials or serving imprisonment are under strict watch and will not be allowed access to outside anti-social elements and carry out nefarious activities.

In the meantime, the poll panel has removed the inspector in-charge of Sitai police station and sub-divisional police officer of Tufanganj in CoochBehar district.
