The Madras High Court today orally directed the Election Commission to furnish details pertaining to the appointment of Anoop Jaiswal as poll-time DGP for Tamil Nadu and adjourned the hearing of a PIL filed by DMK by a day.

The First Bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Satish K Agnihotri and Justice M M Sundresh issued the direction to Senior Counsel for Election Commission of India.

The PIL, filed by DMK's organising secretary and south Chennai Lok Sabha constituency candidate T K S Elangovan, said the appointment of Jaiswal as poll-time DGP has given rise to a piquant situation in Tamil Nadu, which now had two DGPs.

The fact that the incumbent DGP K Ramanujam was still in charge of day-to-day police activities in the state, could cause confusion among police force in the state, it said.

While Ramanujam is in occupation of the regular DGP office, which has all infrastructure, the new DGP cannot have access to DGP office and its facilities, it said, adding it could impede effective policing during polls.

The Election Commission of India had on Saturday, directed the appointment of Jaiswal as DGP (Elections) in a newly created post following DMK's objection against DGP (Law and Order) K Ramanujam continuing in the post following extension.
