Election Commission of India is mulling a planto introduce Voters Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) facility for voters in the coming assembly polls in the Union Territory of Puducherry.
If this facility is introduced, it would be for the first time that an assembly poll in the UT will have the new system for verification by voters.
Chief Electoral Officer of Puducherry V Candavelou told PTI today that it was, however, for the ECI to decide whether the VVPA machines would be installed in all polling booths.
He said the ECI was only considering a plan to install VVPAT machines in Puducherry which would go to Assembly polls in the next few months.
Under the new facility, the voter can see a printout bearing the name of the candidate and the poll symbol he has selected for voting and verify it.
VVPAT machine will be attached to every electronic voting machine that would allow the voters to verify that their vote had been cast correctly.
After the voter views, the receipt goes automatically into a container linked to the Electronic Voting machine and the receipt cannotbe taken by the voter.
