The Election Commission today partially relaxed the Model Code of Conduct(MCC) in West Bengal allowing the state government to go ahead with its development work, but maintained its ban on transfer of officials engaged in poll duty.

"There would not be any bar for the state government in going ahead with development work or for issuing any notification," said Amitjyoti Bhattacharya, Assistant Chief Electroal Officer.

The MCC would be completely withdrawn on May 28, as per the Election Commission's notification, till then, officials engaged in election duties could not be transferred.

The EC had directed the West Bengal government to remove seven senior officials from poll duties following complaints against them.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee opposed the EC's directive, but later complying with the poll panel's order she removed seven senior officials.

The state government had then said that those removed would be reinstated in their previous posts after the polling.
