The East Coast Railway (ECoR) have geared up their machinery to prevent transportation of crackers in trains during the approaching Diwali festival.

The ECoR has advised its three divisions -- Khurda Road, Sambalpur and Waltair -- to launch a Special Safety Drive to keep strict vigils on carrying of inflammable items in trains for the safety of the passengers during Diwali Celebrations, a statement by the railway said today.

Carrying of inflammable objects such as crackers, gas cylinders, acid, petrol, kerosene and others during train journey is a punishable offence under the Railway Act 1989 and the offender may be imprisoned for 3 years.

The ECoR urged passengers not to carry and not let others carry inflammable objects while travelling on trains.

"If any passenger is seen carrying inflammable items, the co-passengers are requested to inform on-duty Railway Staff like TTEs, Coach Attendants, Guards of the train, Station Managers, Railway Protection Force (RPF) & Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel," it said.

The ECoR has also started a Help Line Number 182 for passengers to report any incident concerning crackers being transported on train.

Surprise checks will be carried out in trains in this regard in case of any suspicious regarding carrying of crackers, it said.
