AFP Quito
Ecuador's flag carrier Tame has announced that it was suspending service to Caracas because Venezuela has not released its funds.

The airline yesterday said ticket-holding passengers for the route could request refunds.

"We announce the temporary suspension of regular flights between Ecuador and Venezuela" starting Thursday, Tame announced on Twitter.

"The suspension of flights to Caracas is due to the failure of the BCV (Venezuelan Central Bank) to transfer funds to Tame."

Tame, the main domestic carrier, also started serving New York last year and provides service to Bogota, Buenos Aires, Cali, Caracas, Havana, Lima, Panama City and Sao Paulo.

Tame's fleet is made up of four Embraer planes, 10 Airbus jets and three ATR planes.

Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa is a political ally of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
