Senior IAS officer and ED chief Rajan S Katoch has been appointed as the new Heavy Industries Secretary.

Katoch, a 1979-batch IAS officer from Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been heading the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for over two years now and will take over the new assignment after incumbent Sutanu Behuria retires on July 31.

The appointment of Katoch has been cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

An official order said Katoch will hold the ED post even after July 31, for a period of six months, till a regular officer is posted to head the investigative agency.

The officer, who was appointed as ED chief in March 2012, has been credited with bringing in some of the best practices in the enforcement wing of the Finance Ministry which deals with cases the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

A post-graduate in economics, Katoch has served in the Ministry of Commerce, besides holding a number of posts in his parent cadre.
