Initiating steps to ensure planned development of unauthorised colonies, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) today approved the layout plan for East Azad Nagar.

Out of 895 unauthorised colonies regularised by Delhi government in September last year, 50 come under the ambit of the EDMC, officials said adding that the layout plans for six of these colonies have been made.

Among these six, the layout plan for East Azad Nagar has now been passed, making it the first such colony to get its layout plan approved from the civic authority.

This means that people residing in the colony will be able to get approval for new construction work from the civic body. As many as 83 families are currently residing in the colony, which is spread over an area of three acres.

Jamia Millia Islamia was the technical body for providing assistance to Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to finalise the layout plans.

Meanwhile, the remaining five colonies - namely Shastri Park Extension, Harijan basti Gadholi extension, new Lahori colony Shastri Nagar, Pandav Nagar E and F Block and New Vishwas Nagar - have their layout plans in various stages.

In the case of first two, the plans are with DDA for land-use changes while the other three are with the RWAs. "The plan for New Vishwas Nagar is almost complete and should be the next to get approval," said S S Yadav, Commissioner of EDMC.

RWAs have been reluctant in agreeing to the layout plans as they are concerned about issues such as development charges and demolition action.

Reacting to these concerns, Yadav said people should not be apprehensive of any such action.
