EDMC Mayor says 'denied' access to office, vehicle

East Delhi Mayor Satya Sharma today alleged that she was not allowed to access her office and official vehicle over tenure-related issues.

"On April 28, municipal authorities directed my staff that I was not eligible to access my office or my official car as the mayoral tenure has ended," she said.

The mayoral polls are usually held in April but due to the recent MCD elections on April 23, the new mayors are yet to be elected this year.

Sharma contended that the post of Mayor was a constitutional one and "unless the new mayor has not been elected, how can the outgoing one be denied access to facilities entitled to him or her?"
 

"I am going to write to the Lt Governor and apprise him about the situation. I have already spoken to the North Delhi Municipal Commissioner about the same," she said.

Sharma further claimed that "mayors of north and south Delhi are still enjoying the facilities entitled to them. I do not know why I am being denied the same."

The last mayoral polls were held in April 2016 and the BJP had swept the elections in all three corporations. The saffron party also swept the recent MCD polls in the city, winning 181 wards.

The erstwhile unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was trifurcated in 2012 into North, South and East Delhi Municipal Corporations.

The post of mayor sees five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for open category, third for reserved category, and the remaining two also being in open category.
