Grappling with a financial crisis and strike by its sanitation workers demanding timely salaries and payment of arrears, East Delhi Municipal Corporation's decision making body today passed a proposal for bringing the civic body under charge of Union Home Ministry.
"Standing Committee of EDMC passed this proposal since Delhi Chief Minister, under whose jurisdiction it functions, has openly claimed that his government has nothing to do with the municipal corporation," said Ram Narayan Dubey, Leader of House in the BJP ruled EDMC.
In an open letter published recently in newspapers, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that there is a "misconception" among the people that municipal corporations come under Delhi government. It is "absolutely" incorrect.

As per the MCD Act, 2012, the charge of financial upkeep, posting of senior officers and transfer of staff and many other powers, were brought under the charge of Delhi government, Dubey said.
It was alleged in the proposal considered and passed by Standing Committee that Kejriwal government is "running away" from its responsibilities and "misguiding" people of Delhi while the civic body is in a "financial mess".
The proposal was passed by the Standing Committee having eight members. The passed proposal in form of a resolution has been sent for the consideration of the Lt Governor Najeeb Jung who will take a call on it," Chairperson of Standing Committee Lata Gupta said.
