EDMC today set the ball rolling for construction of its headquarters in east Delhi while sending back the departmental proposal to shift its current temporary facility in Patparganj area to the Civic Centre.

East Delhi Municipal Corporation is currently housed in a government building and has been planning to construct its own headquarters.

The Standing Committee of the EDMC today passed a resolution to begin the process for building its main office at CBD Grounds in trans-Yamuna area, officials said.

"We are reeling under a financial crisis at the moment, so we have set up a team as well to look for avenues to get inexpensive loans for this project. We do not want to go to Civic Centre, but stay in our own area, so we have referred back the departmental proposal to move it (hq) to the Civic Centre," EDMC Standing Committee Chairman Jitender Choudhary told PTI.

Multi-storeyed 'Civic Centre', located opposite New Delhi railway station, currently houses the headquarters of both the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

"We want to build our new facility on the lines of Civic Centre only, whereby, a part of it would leased out to commercial entities," he said.

Choudhary also said to augment the income for the cash-strapped EDMC, the CBD grounds is occasionally rented out for marriage and other functions.

Meanwhile, the EDMC panel today also gave a go-ahead to allow community centres to be used for brief hours, by resident welfare associations (RWAs) and religious bodies.

"Since RWAs and religious bodies work for social causes, so, we thought, they can be allowed to use our community centre facilities to host programmes for two-three hours," he said.
