State-run Energy Efficiency Services today acheived the landmark of distributing 8 crore LED bulbs, including 60 lakh in Delhi, within a year of launch of its scheme UJALA.

According the company's data, the total number of LED bulbs distributed by it across the country reached 8.02 crore (8,02,74,864) today.

When used, the bulbs are expected to save 2,85,61,999 kw/h, including 2,087 MW during peak time, with a total of money estimated to be saved of Rs 11.42 crore.

The company on its website claimed the country is expected to be benefited from daily CO2 emission reduction by 23,137 tonnes.

"Today we have crossed 8 crore number in the country and our plan is to reach as much as we can by March 31. The aspirational target is 9 crore, but given there some holidays between now and March 31, so, let's see. We should reach more than 8.5 crore," Energy Efficiency Services (EESL) managing director Saurabh Kumar said.

In Delhi, around 60 lakh bulbs have been distributed, he said, adding the programme will be closed on March 31 in the national capital.

The official also said the PSU has completed installation of 1.75 lakh LED bulbs in streetlights in the jurisdiction of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).

"Total (target) is about two lakh, the remaining bulbs will be installed by March 31. So, entire SDMC will have LED street lights, which is the largest project in the country," he added.

The company started installing LED bulbs in streetlights in May-June last year.

The UJALA scheme is fully operational in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand.

More states and union territories will be launching the national programme shortly, a statement said. The UJALA scheme-being implemented by EESL- has been widely accepted across rural and urban areas of the country.
