Efforts are being made to reduce crime rate in the city and also restore the credibility of the police force, new Nagpur Police Commissioner said today.

The common man should not suffer and get justice right at the police station level, said the Commissioner S P Yadav, who took charge recently, and listed steps being taken to curb crimes.

Police stations are being equipped with data of criminals and patrol vehicles are to be fitted with GPS system to reach a crime spot in minimum possible time, Yadav said at a press conference, his first as city police chief.

"We want to reduce the response time of police (vehicles). GPS will enable police control room to locate the patrol vehicle which is nearest to the desired spot and issue necessary instructions to reach the crime spot."

Yadav hinted that telephone communication system at the control room will be made digital so that call drop rate is reduced.

To a question on criminal-police nexus, the IPS officer admitted there are some black sheep in the force and vowed to deal with them with an iron hand.

He shared the concerns of citizens on chain snatching incidents and said the existing mobike squad will be strengthened.

Yadav said the city's crime records from 1989 to 2012 are being digitised and will be circulated to police stations shortly.

The process for digitising and updating the crime data from 2012 to 2014 was also underway, he said.
